Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, a lot of people have been stuck abroad, wanting to return home. Sonu Nigam has been stranded in Dubai ever since the lockdown began and is recently being dragged into the controversy involving his tweets from 2017 complaining about the sound of azaan. The same old tweets have since resurfaced and has the singer involved in another controversy regarding the same. The Kal Ho Na Ho singer faced massive backlash once again and people also urged the UAE police to boycott him.
Now, Sonu Nigam has issued a statement to DNA clarifying his stand, “Now is the time for us all to come together to overcome this invisible enemy (Covid-19) and nothing is more of a priority.” He also mentioned that he has not been on Twitter for the last 3 years and is ‘surprised’ to see his name dragged into this controversy. Singer Adnan Sami also came to his defense via social media with a post that read, “As far as Sonu Nigam is concerned, forget about his singing which is incredibly beautiful; he is a true brother who has always been by my side & loved me like my own!! I know for a fact, personally, that he respects all faiths!! Kindly leave him alone... #WithYouSonuNigam,”
In 2017, Sonu Nigam had received a lot of flak for his tweet on azaan and ‘forced religiousness’ which even led to a fatwa being issued by a cleric offering a sum of Rs. 10 lakh to anyone who shaved the singer’s head.

Sonu Nigam had himself shaved off his head as a response to this fatwa. Soon thereafter he’d left Twitter and in a press conference clarified, “I am a secular person. It was not about azaan, it was about the loud sound,” and added that he even mentioned temples and gurudwaras as well but it had gone unnoticed.
