In response to the criticism, AP Dhillon defended his actions by posting videos of other musicians breaking their guitars during live performances, suggesting that his act was not an isolated incident. He captioned his post, "The media is controlled and I’m out of control," reflecting his stance on the situation. During his performance, AP Dhillon paid homage to the late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, who was murdered in May 2022. The ongoing investigation into Moosewala's murder remains unresolved. Dhillon displayed a message on stage that read "Justice for Sidhu Moosewala," honouring the late singer's memory.
Though AP Dhillon's fans supported his performance and tribute, his guitar-smashing moment garnered mixed reactions online. Some users criticized him for what they perceived as disrespect towards the instrument, while others praised his dedication and energy. Several compared him to actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh, noting the differences in their styles and behaviour.
The festival began on April 13 in Indio, California, with various artists such as Lil Uzi Vert, Sabrina Carpenter, Lana Del Rey, Sid Sriram, and ATEEZ performing on the first day. While AP Dhillon's performance added to the festival's excitement, his guitar-smashing act raised discussions about the appropriateness of such gestures in live performances.
