Sourav Ganguly Opens Up On His Tenure As KKR Captain, Reveals Had Asked Shah Rukh Khan For A Free Hand, 'Didn't Happen'
In his latest interview, former captain of IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders opened up on his tenure and how he did not get a free hand while making decisions
Sourav Ganguly served as the captain of IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders owned by Shah Rukh Khan in the year 2008 and 2010. While he could not bring the team a victory under his captaincy, he played a vital role in creating a good position for the team among the top. However, in his latest interview, Sourav Ganguly has made some startling revelations about his tenure as the captain of KKR. Dada recalled an interview of Gautam Gambhir, who is now the captain of SRK owned team, and said that he has been given a free hand. However, when he demanded the same, he didn't get it.
In an interview with Gautam Bhatacharjee, Dada was quoted saying, "I was seeing an interview where Gautam Gambhir said Shah Rukh Khan had told him in the fourth year ‘This is your team, I will not interfere.’ That’s what I told him in the first year. Leave it to me. It didn’t happen." He further went on to add, "The best IPL teams have been those that have left the team to the players. Look at CSK, MS Dhoni runs it. In Mumbai also, no one goes up to Rohit Sharma and tells him to select certain players."
In his book, A Century Is Not Enough, Sourav Ganguly has mentioned his time with KKR and penned that he was in constant touch with owner Shah Rukh Khan in the third season will choosing his team. An excerpt from the book reads, "I used to be in constant touch with him (Shah Rukh) and in season three more than once took his opinion while deciding upon the final eleven – something I had never done while picking an Indian eleven… I thought the decision to leave me out from captaincy was quite justified," as reported by The Indian Express.
