Cherukuri Ramoji Rao, a towering figure in Indian media and entertainment, passed away on June 8 in Hyderabad at the age of 87. The media baron, renowned for his immense contributions to journalism, film production, and philanthropy, was receiving treatment at Star Hospital and succumbed to his illness at 3:45 am, according to news agency ANI.
Born on November 16, 1936, Ramoji Rao's illustrious career spanned several decades. He founded the Ramoji Group, which encompasses a vast array of enterprises. Among them is Eenadu, the largest circulating Telugu newspaper, which has played a significant role in regional journalism. Additionally, he established the ETV Network, which includes a multitude of television channels catering to various audiences across India.
One of Rao's most remarkable achievements was the creation of Ramoji Film City, one of the largest film production facilities in the world. This sprawling complex has become a landmark in the film industry, attracting filmmakers and tourists alike.
Rao's philanthropic efforts were notable as well. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he generously donated Rs 10 crore each to the Chief Ministers’ Relief Funds of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. His contributions were aimed at supporting the governments' efforts to combat the deadly virus that claimed millions of lives worldwide.
In recognition of his significant contributions to literature, journalism, and media, Ramoji Rao was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2016, India's second-highest civilian award, by then-President Pranab Mukherjee. This prestigious honor highlighted Rao's impact on Indian society and culture.
The Ramoji Group's diverse portfolio also includes Margadarsi Chit Fund, Ramadevi Public School, Priya Foods, Kalanjali, and Ushakiran Movies. Additionally, Rao served as the chairman of the Dolphin Group of Hotels in Andhra Pradesh, further showcasing his versatile business acumen.
Rao's influence extended to the film industry, where he received numerous accolades for his work in Telugu cinema. His accolades include four Filmfare Awards South, five Nandi Awards, and the National Film Award, underscoring his contributions to Indian cinema.
