A tragic accident occurred near Durbuk in Ladakh on Thursday when a school bus carrying 27 passengers lost control and plunged into a 200-meter-deep gorge, resulting in the loss of seven lives and injuring 20 others. According to reports from the Indian Army, the accident took place at around 11:05 AM. The bus, which was transporting students and staff, suddenly veered off the road, leading to the devastating plunge. Fortunately, troops stationed in the vicinity quickly noticed the incident and rushed to the scene to assist in the rescue efforts.

The Indian Army's swift response was crucial in the aftermath of the accident. All 27 passengers, including six who were initially declared deceased, were evacuated to a nearby Military Hospital and a Primary Health Centre at Tangste. The injured were given immediate medical attention. Given the severity of some injuries, the army conducted 14 sorties using military ALH and Cheetal helicopters to airlift the victims to the Military Hospital in Leh for further treatment.




Upon arrival at the Military Hospital, one additional passenger succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total fatalities to seven. The remaining 20 injured, including three children and 17 women, were stabilized and then transferred to SNM Hospital in Leh for advanced care. Among the injured, one individual with a severe spinal injury was kept at the Military Hospital in Leh for further evaluation, including an MRI, and continued treatment.






This accident has cast a shadow of grief over the community, highlighting the dangers of navigating the challenging terrains of Ladakh. The prompt action of the Indian Army in rescuing and providing medical care to the victims undoubtedly saved lives and prevented further casualties. However, the loss of seven lives, including possibly students, has left a profound impact on the region, as families and friends mourn the sudden and tragic loss of their loved ones. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for extra caution and safety measures in such treacherous regions to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
