Karwa Chauth 2023: Date, Puja Vidhi, Vrat Katha Video And Significance Of The Auspicious Festival In India
Karwa Chauth, also known as Karak Chaturthi, is just around the corner and this year the auspicious festival falls on November 01. Karva Chauth is based on the lunisolar calendar, which accounts for all astronomical positions. The festival falls on the fourth day after the full moon.

During this festival, married women observe a difficult nirjala vrat (fasting without food and water) for their husbands' well-being, prosperity, and longevity. Women worship Lord Ganesha, Maa Parvati, Lord Shiva and Lord Kartikeya on Karwa Chaut and break the fast after sighting the moon.

Following the spotting of the moon through a sieve, married women eat a morsel of food and a sip of water from their husbands' hands to break the fast. The vrat is an important ritual of the festival, while married women generally observe it, married men and unmarried couples also keep the fast. There are many dos and don'ts one needs to follow while observing the festival.

  • Sit in a quiet, clean place and make a Sankalp (pledge) to observe the fast for the well-being and longevity of your husband.
  • Place a picture or idol of Goddess Parvati for the puja and arrange all the necessary items for the puja.
  • Now start the puja rituals and keep a fast for the whole day without consuming food or water.
  • Offer water, flowers, and rice to the Goddess Parvati's idol or picture and apply kumkum on the idol and offer sweets.
  • In the evening, gather the other fasting women and listen to the Karwa Chauth Katha, which narrates the story of Queen Veeravati and her devotion to her husband.
  • When it is time for the moonrise, get ready for the moon sighting by arranging a thali (plate) with a diya, a karwa (pitcher), some sweets, and chawal (rice).
  • When the moon rises, take the thali in your hands and see the moon through a sieve, offer arghya (water) to the moon and seek the blessings of the moon for your husband's long life.
  • After seeing the moon, see your husband's face through the sieve. Now, your husband will offer you water and some food to break your fast.
  • Take a sip of water and then eat something sweet. This marks the end of your fast.
