Veteran Bollywood actress and politician Jaya Bachchan has made a name for herself in the industry with her versatile performances. Over the years, she has been receiving scrutiny from the netizens for her behaviour. On Monday, she invited a lot of mixed reactions after she lashed out at the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Harivansh Narayan Singh, for addressing her as Jaya Amitabh Bachchan in the parliament. She took a moment to remind everyone that she has her own identity and doesn’t need to be referred to by her husband’s name.

As Singh called to speak during a parliament session on Monday, he was heard saying, “Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan ji, please.” She corrected him and said that even calling her Jaya Bachchan would have been enough. He goes on to point out that, it was how her name had been officially registered. She exclaimed how addressing women by their husband’s name is something new. The women don’t have any other identity of their own, and they have no achievements. Quoted by the Hindustan Times, she was heard saying in Hindi, “Ye jo hain kuch naya tarika hain ki mahilaayen apni pati ke naam se jaani jaye. Unka koi astitva nahi. Unki koi upalabdh hi nahi hain, apne mein aur astitva nahi hain. Well, as soon as the video went viral on social media, netizens reacted to it and called her ‘brave’. While some trolled her, many came out in her support. Some questioned why adding Bachchan Senior’s name was that important. One wrote, “No but why Amitabh got added? If she has not added then who did...or it is happening for everyone.” 

Calling out misogynistic comments of trollers, one pointed out, “People today are so selective. Had there been any other woman in her place, the comments would have supported her. She is not wrong though. Before she became a 'Bachchan' she was a successful actress herself. Indeed, how far we have come.”



On the work front, Jaya Bachchan was last seen in Karan Johar’s romantic drama, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. On the other hand, Amitabh Bachchan will be next seen in Section 84, Kalki 2898 AD, and the official remake of the hit Hollywood movie The Intern.
