Filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga became quite the sensation after he remade Vijay Deverakonda starrer Arjun Reddy in Hindi. Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani starrer Kabir Singh left the audiences with mixed reaction. While a section of the audience saw it as a film, others called it out for celebrating men’s anger issues and its misogynistic views. Recently, during Amol Parchure’s podcast Catch Up, Marathi filmmaker and National Award winning director Nikhil Mahajan opened up about his friendship with Vanga.
Having struggled in the film industry together, Mahajan revealed that the Animal director narrated Arjun Reddy’s script to him in front of Shah Rukh Khan’s bungalow Mannat. He opened up about the same and revealed in Marathi, “Sandeep was trying to make Arjun Reddy and he had an actor but wasn’t getting a producer for the film. At that point Vijay Deverakonda wasn’t affiliated with the film. He was very worried. One day he called me and told me that he was quite bored. Nikhil added how the Kabir Singh director came at his place and they spoke at length after quite a few years. “One day after dinner I told him that we should go to Mannat, as I share a connection with the bungalow. We reached there at around 11pm -12 am, and he asked me if he could tell me about a script. I urged him to do so. For over 2-2 1/2 hours he narrated the film’s script, which he had been working one for years. He was very immersed in narrating the script to me. “I was quite confident that the film will happen. However, I didn’t know that the impact of the film would be so tremendous, that it would be remade in Hindi as Kabir Singh. One thing that I knew was that the clarity he had about the film was amazing and I told him that he shouldn’t give up on the film but hold on to it. He did just that and the rest is history,” he concluded.
