BJP MP Upendra Singh MMS: Politician Claims Viral Video Is DeepFake, Says 'Will Quit Electoral Politics Until Proven Innocent'
In a recent surge of DeepFake AI-generated content affecting public figures, political leader Upendra Singh Rawat, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Barabanki, found himself at the centre of controversy. A purported obscene video, featuring Rawat in an objectionable position with a woman, circulated widely on social media. The video gained prominence just a day after the BJP nominated him for the Barabanki seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024.

Rawat swiftly responded to the controversy on Monday, asserting through his official social media account that the video is a product of DeepFake AI technology. He maintained that the video is falsified and has urged BJP National President JP Nadda to conduct an inquiry into the matter. Rawat declared that he will refrain from participating in any elections during his public life until proven innocent. Notably, he revealed the filing of an FIR in connection with the incident and emphasized that a thorough investigation will be launched.

The manipulated video portrays Barabanki MP Upendra Singh Rawat in a compromising position with a foreign woman, sparking widespread condemnation and drawing attention from opposition leaders. Rawat, addressing the issue on his 'X' account, stated, "An edited video of mine is being made viral, which is generated by DeepFake AI technology, for which I have lodged an FIR. In this regard, I have requested the Honorable National President to get it investigated. I will not contest any election in public life until I am proven innocent."

An FIR was officially filed by Rawat's personal secretary, Dinesh Chandra Rawat, naming an unknown accused at the Kotwali Police Station. The complaint outlined that individuals had disseminated a doctored video of the MP with the intent to tarnish his reputation. The release of the obscene video coincided with Rawat's inclusion in the BJP's candidates' list for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections in 2024.
