Veteran Bollywood actress and Samajwadi Party Member of Parliament Jaya Bachchan recently ignited a controversy in the Indian Parliament when she expressed her disapproval at being addressed by her husband Amitabh Bachchan's name. During a session on Monday, she reiterated her stance, which led to a notable exchange with Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, drawing applause and cheers from fellow members. A video clip that has since gone viral shows Dhankhar introducing Jaya as "Smt Jaya Amitabh Bachchan," the name listed on her official nomination papers. In response, she questioned him, asking, "Sir, aapko Amitabh ka matlab pata hai na?" (Sir, do you know what Amitabh means?). Unfazed by her objection, Dhankhar replied assertively, suggesting that she could officially change the name on her election certificate if she wished. He added, "There is a procedure to change the name that you have submitted for your election certificate. I had made use of the provision myself in 1989, and it is available for all the members. Please change it officially then." His firm response garnered significant support from other parliamentarians.




While Jaya clarified that she takes pride in her husband's achievements and feels no shame in being associated with him, netizens were quick to praise Dhankhar's retort. Comments flooded social media, with one user pointing out the contradiction in Jaya's stance: "On one hand, she says she is very proud of her husband; on the other hand, she has a problem with the Speaker calling her by her full name—the name she provided herself. Glad that Jagdeep Dhankhar ji taught her a lesson." Another user remarked on Jaya's perceived hypocrisy, stating, "Jaya Amitabh Bachchan once again tried acting oversmart with her objection over using 'Amitabh' in her name. The controversy traces back to July 29 when Jaya first objected to Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh referring to her as Jaya Amitabh Bachchan, asserting that she has her own identity independent of her husband. In a later session, she humorously introduced herself as "Main Jaya Amitabh Bachchan," leaving Dhankhar amused. This incident has sparked discussions about identity and representation in public life, with many labelling her reaction as hypocritical given her dual stance on her identity".
