Your show has topped the ratings chart. How does it feel?
It encourages me to do much better.
What was Abhinav’s reaction? (Abhinav Shukla is Rubina’s boyfriend and former co-star.)
(Laughs) He jumped in joy. I was apprehensive to take up this show because it deals with a sensitive issue, but Abhinav didn’t have any second thoughts. He told me, ‘This is a golden opportunity and you can’t let it go’. When I broke the news about Shakti… topping the rating chart, he said, ‘I told you’.
Has Shakti’s success made you more confident?
To be honest, my nervousness has increased. Now that the show is doing really good, I feel a lot more responsible. It is difficult to sustain success and that is my next battle.
You play a transgender in the show. Was it tough?
The entire team has given their input while creating my look. We were apprehensive whether we’ll be accepted or not. A lot of hard work was involved and it took many look tests before we finally zeroed in on my present look.
Did you meet any member of the transgender community to prepare for the role?
I am not a method actor, I believe in action and reaction. I study the script and act accordingly. When you are part of the character’s journey, it becomes easier to perform.
You mentioned being apprehensive...
You see, the idea of the show is not to segregate the transgender community. The show wants to convey the message that we all are one, we are trying to bridge the gap.
How did your parents react to your new look?
They are proud that I have taken this risk. It really feels great to see your parents accepting such a character. I feel motivated.
What can we expect from the show now?
As Soumya (her character) is now a part of the transgender community , she will now follow their culture and traditions. She will also have a new identity – Tarana. A lot of interesting things will happen in her life now.
Do you think after the show, people will be more compassionate towards the transgender community?
The whole idea has been to bring about a change in people’s perspective. Even if there is 0.5% change in their thought process, we have done our job. We are not here to change the society, we are here spread a message through entertainment.
