Choosing your life-partner without your parents’ will is not something that a lot of people can do, well, it requires a lot of guts. One such case is that TV actress Divya Bhatnagar, who has been a part of shows like Udann, Jeet Gayi Toh Piyaa Morre and Vish, recently got married to her boyfriend Gagan. The two dated for five years before taking their relationship to the next level; however, it wasn’t a smooth journey. In a conversation with Times of India, Divya revealed how her mother was, and is still, strictly against their marriage because Gagan belongs to another caste.

The couple got marriage amid a low-key ceremony in a Gurudwara in the presence of very close few friends and their parents gave it a miss. “Gagan and I have faced a lot of hurdles as our families did not approve of our relationship. Every time we thought of tying the knot, we would face a new obstacle. We got engaged in 2015, without our families present to solemnise the ceremony,” she said. Divya added that the couple tried their best to convince her mother but she wasn’t just ready.

The actress added, “My mother was against our marriage, as we belong to different castes. We tried our best to convince her, but in vain. Both my mom and I have been through tough times after my father passed away in 2017. I even moved to Delhi, as I was shattered after his death and not in a state to work. I returned to Mumbai eventually, because I wanted to get my life back on track. Despite all these odds, Gagan and I were sure about being together. Finally, we decided to tie the knot.”

Further, Divya revealed that the two were heartbroken over how their families weren’t there to bless the couple on such an auspicious occasion. At present, Divya resides in Mumbai, whereas her mother is staying in Delhi and she is optimistic about convincing her soon.  “I know thodi naraazgi hai, par mujhe pata hai sab theek ho jaayega, eventually. I am certain that she will come around, as, for a parent, nothing is more important than her child’s happiness,” she concluded.
