Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan was re-run on television during the imposed lockdown. The re-runs of the show were watched by many fans worldwide and in the country during the weekends. As Ramayan garnered a huge fan base, the 1987 show broke worldwide records being the most-watched show globally. Now, in an interview, actors Dipika Chikhlia who played Sita and Sunil Lahri who played the character of Lord Ram’s brother Laxman reveal that director Sagar Sahab had court cases against him. Speaking with Pinkvilla, Ramayan’s actors Dipika Chikhlia and Sunil Lahri answered questions related to Sita’s agnipareeksha or dhobi story that has been a topic of debate over the years. Talking about the agnipareeksha scene, Sunil Lahiri shared that he had a little discussion about it and asked Sagar Sahab why the scene is there. The actor who played the role of Laxman said, “I did come to Sagar Sir and asked him why this scene is there. Ram is a god and he must know that Sita is pure, so why this agnipareeksha? I asked him will this not give out a wrong message and he explained to me the purpose, what you see on screen as well. There was a little correction that took place while writing where Laxman get angry on Ram for the same."
Moving on further, actress Dipika Chikhlia revealed that Sagar Sahab had some court cases going on. Talking about director Ramanand Sagar, Chikhlia said, “Papa ji (Sagar Sahab) had a lot of cases against him.” Sharing insights on the story about dhobi, she said, “Actually, the story about dhobi is not part of the original Ramayan, it is more of a folktale. Over the years, it has developed into a story. Papaji had a lot of cases against him.” While the actress shared some details on Ramanand Sagar, she also mentioned that when the cast and crew of Ramayan shot for Uttar Ramayan, Sagar Sahab was not there half the time. She shared that he wasn't there because he was juggling between the court and shoot and mentioned that there was a lot of fury and also shared how there were scholars who did not accept the director’s version of Ramayan.
Meanwhile, Dipika Chikhlia who enacted Sita in the show Ramayan also shared how every Mother's Day, and Woman's Day, she would hear people talking about Sita portrayed as an abla nari. Talking about how the re-run of the show changed the perspective of the people towards certain scenes, Chikhlia said that she feels her life is easier as people know what happened and why.
