Kaun Banega Crorepati has been one of the most-watched quiz shows in India. Hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, this show has huge popularity all over India and it is currently in its 11th season. Recently, a question on the quiz show with a reference to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj triggered a controversy that led Twitterati to trend ‘Boycott KBC’. Twitter users were furious with the disrespectful reference to the Maratha warrior. Now, the channel has issued an apology for the inaccurate reference during Wednesday’s episode.  

The Hindu reported that Maharashtra BJP MLA Nitesh Rane demanded an apology from the channel for ‘disrespectful’ reference to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. As per the report, Rane had said that the channel has insulted the 17th century Maratha warrior ) by referring him in the first-person singular form and that it should tender apology at the earliest. The question asked by Amitabh Bachchan on KBC, was about the contemporaries of Aurangazeb and in one of the four options, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was mentioned as “Shivaji”, while other options were Maharana Pratap, Rana Sanga and Maharaja Ranjit Singh. One Twitter user wrote, “Calling Aurangzeb as Emperor & naming just 'Shivaji' to The Great Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is an insult to the seat of faith of a BILLION Hindus !” while another wrote, “Bharat (India) is land of valiant Hindu Kings & warriors who fought back barbaric islamic invasions. The channel issued an apology today and wrote, “There was an inaccurate reference to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj during Wednesday’s KBC episode, due to inadvertence. We deeply regret the same and being mindful of the sentiments of our viewers have carried a scroll expressing regret during our episode yesterday. #KBC11.”
