Bhabhiji Ghar Par Hain’s Soumya Tandon Reveals She Was Rejected Abroad For Being ‘Too Fair’, Was Told ‘You’re Not Brown, You’ll Not Be Cast As Indian’
Recently, the debate over racism and colorism has reignited once again. After George Floyd’s death, people protested against racism, and Bollywood stars such as Priyanka Chopra, Disha Patani, Deepika Padukone, among others also showed their support to the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement and spoke out against racism in US. However, they were soon called out for their hypocrisy as they were posting about anti-racism while promoting skin lightening products in their own country. Since then, many celebrities spoke up about being discriminated and facing bias based on their skin color. Now, Bhabhiji Ghar Par Hain star Saumya Tandon revealed that discrimination isn’t limited to just people who aren’t fair, as she has also been rejected for being too fair in the past.

Recalling her own experience, Saumya Tandon said in an interview with Hindustan Times, that she lost out on a lot of work due to her skin color as when she gives auditions abroad, she is told that she is too fair, and they have a preconceived notion of an Indian girl being brown. “I lost out on a lot of work because they said ‘she is too fair’, because they perceive an Indian girl to not be that, she should be ‘brown’. A lot of auditions I give abroad, they say ‘oh you are fair, Indian girls are not supposed to be that’. I said it’s so stereotypical. The world outside perceives the Indian girl to be brown,” said Saumya.

Saumya Tandon said since actors of Indian origin, working abroad as Indians are shown to be brown, they will not accept any other colour. “I have been rejected being told ‘you are not brown, so you will not be cast as an Indian,” she said.

Saumya Tandon also shared her experience of losing out on an international film to another girl who wasn’t fair, recently. She was also asked if she feels being called 'gori mem' on her show Bhabhiji Ghar Par Hain, is classifying her on the basis of color. She replied saying that she doesn't find it as an abuse so long as they aren't saying they will prefer her because she is fair.
