Renowned Tamil playback singer Uma Ramanan left for her heavenly abode on Wednesday, May 1. At the age of 72, she breathed her last in Chennai. Known for her collaborations with music maestro Ilaiyaraaja, reports suggest that passed away while battling an illness. According to the reports by the Hindustan Times, the cause of her death is still unknown. Fans are eagerly waiting for details on her funeral service. Her admirers were left in deep shock after the news of her sudden passing surfaced on the internet.
Having made a mark in the music industry with her melodious voice, she is survived by her husband AV Ramanan, a singer, and their son Vignesh Ramanan. She honed her skills in classical music under Pazhani Vijayalakshmi’s coaching. It was during that time that she met her now-husband. He was reportedly looking for vocalists for his live performances. Their professional collaboration soon culminated in a beautiful love story.
As reported by India.com, the late playback singer carved a niche for herself in the Tamil music industry by performing in over 6,000 concerts for more than 30 years. She made her debut with the song Mohanan Kannan Murali from the movie Sri Krishna Leela (1977). Having been a part of the industry for more than three decades, her association with renowned music composer Ilaiyaraaja was often remembered by the audience. The singer-composer duo churned out hits like Bhoopalam Isaikkum, Aanandha Raagam, Ponn Maanae, Kanmani Nee Vara, and many others.
Apart from her collaborations with the 80-year-old music composer, she also worked with other composers like MSV, Shankar-Ganesh, T Rajender, Deva, SA Rajkumar, and Vidyasagar, to name a few. Her untimely passing has left a hole in the hearts of the audience, who immediately took to their social media handles to express their shock and condole her loss.
