Malayalam Industry Me Too Movement: Actress Sowmya REVEALS Tamil Director Groomed Her To Be 'Sex Slave' At Age Of 18
Sowmya also claimed that the director wanted a child with her as she opened up about sexual assault from a south filmmaker at the age of 18
As the revelations from the Hema report and the ongoing #MeToo movement continue to shake the Malayalam film industry, actress Sujatha, known by her screen name Sowmya, recently opened up about a disturbing experience from her past. In an interview with NDTV, Sowmya claimed that when she was just 18 years old, she was groomed to be a "sex slave" by a Tamil filmmaker. Without naming the director, she recounted the harrowing ordeal that left a deep and lasting impact on her life.
Sowmya shared that she had made some initial connections in the entertainment industry through a college theatre group. It was through these connections that the Tamil filmmaker approached her father, expressing interest in casting her in a film. From their first meeting, Sowmya felt uneasy around the director, but she believed she had an obligation to work with him due to the significant amount of money he had invested in casting her for the role. Once on set, she faced what she described as "angry silent treatment" from the director, which intimidated her and made her anxious to avoid his displeasure.
The situation worsened when the director and his wife invited Sowmya to their home, offering her food and treats. However, one day, when his wife was absent, the director crossed a boundary by kissing her while still referring to her as his "daughter." Sowmya was left frozen with fear and shame, unable to share her experience with anyone, believing she had somehow done something wrong. This continued, with the director forcing himself on her and eventually raping her over the course of nearly a year. All the while, he manipulated her by calling her his daughter and even expressing a desire to have a child with her.
Sowmya revealed that the director’s manipulation left her deeply scarred, and it took her 30 years to recover from the shame and trauma she carried. Despite the magnitude of the abuse, she chose not to publicly reveal the director's name, citing concerns for her safety. However, she did report the incident to the police, hoping that her story would raise awareness about the predatory behavior present in the film industry.
Sowmya's account adds to the growing list of women in the Indian film industry who have come forward as part of the #MeToo movement, bravely sharing their experiences of sexual exploitation. Her story is a painful reminder of the systemic abuse that many women face, particularly in male-dominated industries like film.
