Renowned Malayalam actor Innocent Vareed Thekkethala has left for his heavenly abode. The veteran breathed his last at the age of 75 on Sunday night at 10:30 pm at the VPS Lakeshore Hospital in Kochi. A cancer survivor, NDTV reported that “the non-functioning of many organs and a heart attack” led the actor to pass away. The Malayalam industry and fans are in deep shock after learning about the actor’s sudden passing. 

Earlier in March he was admitted to the hospital due to respiratory problems. ETimes in their report had mentioned that he could be suffering a cancer relapse. It was later clarified that he was on ECMO support, which stands for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. For the unversed, it pumps and oxygenates a patient's blood outside the body, allowing the heart and lungs to rest. Well-known actors Prithviraj Sukumaran and Dulquer Salmaan took to their official social media handles to express deep shock. Sharing a photo of the veteran, Prithviraj wrote, “End of an iconic chapter in cinema history! Rest in peace Legend!.”


On the other hand, Salmaan shared a compilation of pictures with the legendary actor and shared an emotional note. He expressed how the late actor has been like a family to everyone who knew him. The actor added, “You were my childhood. And I grew upto act along side you. And you regaled us with stories then and now. Always gathering people. Always lifting them up. My thoughts are all over the place. As is my writing. The actor was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago, however he had responded to the treatment and gotten better. From then on he has been publicly talking about his battle with the disease. Innocent even wrote a book ‘Laughter in the Cancer Ward’ to spread awareness about cancer. His book focuses on the medical care he received and how he dealt with the mental pressure during his recovery.

Talking about his work, the comedian created his own niche in the Malayalam film industry. The 75-year-old has worked in more than 750 movies including projects in English, Tamil and Kannada. Not only does he have a very illustrious career of decades, but he has also served as the president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). He has held the title for the past four consecutive terms now. 

He is his wife Alice, and their son, Sonnet.
