2 Times Kerala MLA Mukesh KICKED Out From Film Body Amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations

The #MeToo scandal that has shaken the Malayalam film industry has led to significant political consequences, especially after the release of the Justice Hema Committee report. The scandal’s first major political fallout involves actor Mukesh, who is also a CPI(M) MLA. Mukesh has been removed from a state government panel responsible for formulating cinema-related policies, a decision that reflects the growing pressure on political leaders to address the serious allegations emerging from the industry.
Mukesh faces accusations of sexual assault from actor Minu Muneer, who alleged that he, along with another actor, Jayasurya, abused her on a film set in 2013. Minu further claimed that Mukesh made unwanted advances when she approached him for assistance in joining the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), the industry’s prominent actors' organization. These allegations have added to the already mounting controversy surrounding the Malayalam film industry, where multiple accusations of sexual misconduct have come to light.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, facing intense criticism from the opposition, including the BJP and the Congress-led United Democratic Front, has responded by establishing a seven-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to thoroughly investigate all the sexual assault allegations. So far, 17 cases have been registered against various actors and filmmakers, with some high-profile names like Siddique and Ranjith Balakrishnan facing serious charges. Ranjith Balakrishnan, in particular, has been accused of molestation by Bengali actor Sreelekha Mitra, further highlighting the widespread nature of the issue.
The Justice Hema Committee, a three-member panel, was originally set up by the state government in 2017 to investigate the prevalence of sexual harassment in the Malayalam film industry. Although the committee submitted its report in 2019, the findings were not made public until recently, largely due to legal challenges from members of the film industry who sought to prevent its release. Now that the report is in the public domain, it has catalyzed a wave of accountability and scrutiny within both the film industry and the political sphere.
The developments in the Malayalam film industry underscore the broader impact of the #MeToo movement in India, particularly in challenging entrenched power dynamics and bringing issues of sexual harassment to the forefront. The actions taken against Mukesh and others accused of misconduct mark a significant step in addressing the systemic problems within the industry, though the road ahead remains complex and fraught with challenges as investigations proceed.
