EXCLUSIVE! MTV Hustle Fame Lekhak Opens Up About His New EP ‘S.A.D’, Says, ‘Talk To Your Friends And Family, That Is Enough To Heal You’
MTV Hustle fame Lekhak recently released his debut EP ‘S.A.D’. Following the journey of a young man who deals with Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.), the songs express how it affects his relationships. The singer, who has garnered a significant fan base on social media due to his melodic voice, recently sat down with SpotboyE for an exclusive chat to open up about the thought process behind making the album. He also spoke about how he believes that depression is a ‘myth,’ which can be cured by having open communication with near and dear ones.

1. You gained recognition from MTV hustle, can you share a little about your journey of becoming a singer?
I started when I was 13-14 years old. I got into shayaris (poems), reading them and writing them. During the same time, I lost someone very dear to me who was also very interested in shayaris. When I had nothing to remember them by, I started writing shayaris for them. Music has always had a huge influence on my family, mere papa bahut achha gaate the aur genetically meri awaaz bhi thik hai. That is how I got into music. Slowly, I started writing songs and my interest in it started increasing day-by-day. So, that is how my journey in the music industry started.

2. Who was your first inspiration/idol from the music industry?
There are a lot. I take inspiration from everywhere. Every individual faces certain experiences, achievements in their life, which might in turn inspire others. If I like a song, I’m inspired. I feel ki aisa maine kyun nahi socha ya likha. Aise toh musical inspiration chalte rehti hai. The artists that I’m very fond of are Ikka Singh and Raftaar, they help others a lot. As human beings they are gems. These are some of the artists that inspire me a lot.

3. What was the thought process behind your debut EP ‘Phases of the S.A.D. Heart’?
I was reading something when I found out that Sad also has a full form. It’s not an emotion but a disorder known as Seasonal Affective Disorder. Mera dimaag hil gaya ki yeh kya ek naya concept hai. When I started researching more I found out that the disorder is a state of mind where one feels low or sad without any particular reason. Aapka kuch karne ka mann nahi karta, that is Seasonal Affective Disorder. It keeps popping up from time to time. This disorder increases in some people which leads to people being diagnosed with anxiety and depression.

‘S.A.D’ is basically a young man’s journey, just like there are 7 phases of love, the EP also has phases. Starting by the first song in the EP, ‘Same’, it is about a couple's fight. Both of them are trying to communicate the same thing, but woh waala phase aata hai na miscommunication waala, jahan koi kisiki baat hi samajh nahi paa raha. Both are trying to say the same thing, but the meaning is different. The song justifies this particular phase in a relationship.

The second song is ‘Khadoos’, where one person is more stubborn than the other and decides that now it is not working out. In the song, I have to agree with the decision of the other person to split kyunki aap aise hi kisike saath nahi rahe sakte. Then we come to ‘Pagal Mai Hu,’ where one is free after getting out from the relationship. His mind is free, usko life ki choti choti cheezein samajh aa rahi hai. Then the last song is ‘Shadaayi,’ where he is moving on from the relationship. These are a few phases of the relationship, so this is what i have portrayed in my album.

4. Using music as a medium to address a lesser-known form of depression is pretty unique, what challenges did you face?
Music has never been challenging for me. Most of the people who pursue music, I might be wrong but, music is like an escape. Aisa kabhi nahi hota ki aap sochke gaana likhte hai. I’ve never written a song, talking in particular about the S.A.D EP, after putting too much thought into it ki aaj mein iss emotion pe aaj gana banaunga. These things come naturally and I genuinely believe that there should be more conversation around topics like depression as it is very important. But, personally I feel like it’s all in the head. Jab aap maan jaate ho ki depression hai, toh aapko ho jaayega.

Until you believe that ‘I’m absolutely fine,’ that you go out and talk to people, your friends, and family, that is enough to heal that part of you rather than taking the help of medicines. For me these thoughts are myths. It wasn’t as difficult since the feelings that I had naturally poured out of me. I’m very glad that the listeners are able to relate to my songs. The emotions we as people feel are constant, just the way we feel them are a bit different.

5. Your future projects?
My EP with T-Series has been launched. There are a few projects and collaborations happening in the future. I’m working on another EP too jiska core hip-hop hai. Usmein bhi experimentation toh mein karunga hi. I want to work and churn out various different genres. I will announce the rest of the projects soon as and when things are ready.

6. Message for your fans
A message for the fans would be ki aise hi dekhte raho, pyaar dete raho. I’m just like them, nothing different. I don’t believe in the concept of fans. They are my true listeners just like my family likes to listen to my songs. So, thank you everyone for listening to my songs and please keep on showering your love and affection on me. I won’t let you down.
