7 IPL teams slapped with legal notice by Indian Singers Rights Association
Here's the latest update from the world of Bollywood. We bet you wouldn't want to miss this. Read on for details... B’wood songs can’t be played unless the artiste has been paid royalty
Delhi High Court has granted an injunction against 7 teams in the Indian Premier League 2016 – Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kings XI Punjab, Rising Pune SuperGiants, Gujarat Lions and BCCI – restraining them from using songs during cricket matches without obtaining clearance from ISRA (Indian Singers Rights Association).

Popular Bollywood songs are seen played during matches in order to cheer the audiences. However, ISRA - whose members include Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan, Alka Yagnik among others - had taken an objection to it last year itself.

Their argument was that as per the amended Copyright Act, anyone who uses a singer’s performance commercially is liable to pay royalties.
ISRA got in touch with the BCCI and the 8 IPL franchises in October 2015. But only Delhi Daredevils adhered to the law.
So this time, ISRA has resorted to legal means before the IPL matches kick-start today.
Sanjay Tandon, Managing Director of ISRA, says, “Despite our requests, 7 IPL teams paid no heed to the Copyright Act and used popular songs during their matches without paying the concerned singers their Performer Rights Royalties. This year, they left us with no option but to go to the court for justice.”
