Indian Idol Contestant Nahid Afrin's Reply To The Fatwa: I Will Not Quit Music

Nahid Afrin, the participant of the reality show Indian Idol Junior(2015), is in the headlines for the wrong reason since last night.

42 Muslim clerics have issued a fatwa against the 15-year-old in Assam for the singer is scheduled to perform in Udali Sonai Bibi College, which is a few yards away from the mosque and a graveyard on March 25. In an exclusive chat with SpotboyE.com, the brave girl narrates the traumatic incident but also assures fighting it out.

Excerpts:

When did you get to know about the entire incident?
Last night, my father switched on one of the locals news channels and this news was being flashed as ‘breaking news’. When I saw that, I was in tears and began sobbing. Even my parents were crying looking at the news. Music is a harmless thing but I never knew my interest in it will get me such negative reactions. (Pauses)

...But then I thought that I should not bow down to anything. I thought about these legendary singers like Rafi sahab, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan sahab and many more. That gave me a lot of strength. Also, a lot of artistes called me up and encouraged me.

Who were the ones to call you up?
Vishal Dadlani sir called me and said he is willing to help me under any circumstances. Also, a lot of Assamese artistes like Zubeen Garg texted me and said that they were with me. Our Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonwal called me up personally and said that Assam Government is always with me. This is not the first time that he has backed me though.  He has always been the first person to lend his support.

How did your parents react to the fatwa issued against you?
As I said, we all broke down on watching the news but later we composed ourselves. My father said that I should stand strong and fight this out.  He asked me to be brave. This has given me the strength and I will not quit music. In fact, I have become more determined.

A lot of celebs including Sania Mirza have been slapped with these kind of fatwas. How fair is this according to you?
Yes, a lot of them have gone through this ordeal. I am just 15, so I am not in the right age to comment. But I would just say music connects me to Allah. I consider music divine.

So you will perform on March 25 at the Udali Sonai Bibi College?
Oh yes! But I won’t deny that I am a little hesitant because I feel a few people from the ones who issued the fatwa could be present in the crowd.
