Hard Kaur: Except Shraddha, not a single actress is a good singer

Ek Glassy singer Hard Kaur can be seen practising her cricket skills nowadays. No, she hasn’t turned cricketer. The rapper has joined Team Ahmedabad Express in the ongoing Box Cricket League, Season 2. SpotboyE caught up with the singer to talk about cricket, music and more. Excerpts:

From singing to playing cricket, how did that happen?
I really didn’t know I had a passion for cricket until a couple of months ago. As a kid, I used to play gully cricket but when I shifted to UK, I stopped playing as kids there don’t really play cricket. BCL 2 happened because of Jassi (Jaswir Kaur), who convinced me to join Ahmedabad Express team.

How did you become friends with Jaswir Kaur?
I met her during BCL Punjab when I went there to do a promotional song. She suggested that I become a part of BCL and since I was excited by the game, I thought of giving it a shot. I was amazed seeing her bowling skills. I call her ‘Indian Don friend’. Though we only know each other for a couple of months, we feel like long-lost friends.

What’s happening on the singing front?
I recently released my single, Aise Karte Hai Party, in January. I have four more singles planned for this year. The next, Sherni, will come out in May.

What do you have to say about actresses turning singers? Do you see them as a threat?
What threat? Achhe hote to threat hoti.

You don’t think any of them is a good singer…
None…maybe except Shraddha Kapoor. I think she is a good singer. I am not a fan of these actresses for their singing skills; but as actors, they are very good. I also acted in Patiala House. That doesn’t make me an actor. Just like acting in one film doesn’t make you an actress, singing a song in a film doesn’t make you a singer.

In the past few years, the rap industry has faced a lot of flak for using derogatory lyrics against women…
This is a never-ending debate. I will say that one should use sensible words because songs are meant to be enjoyed by all. Every song doesn’t have to revolve around how many women you can f**k with. If I am making a party song, it can be a fun one without involving women. It’s not about what you say, it’s about how you say it. I don’t create songs with negativity. But yeah, if you don’t have an understanding of the lyrics, you might take it in an offensive way.

Most party numbers seem repetitive. What’s your take on it?
I would blame the labels who are brainwashing people with the same stuff. Their only aim is to make money instead of making good songs. There have been times when I have made a record company listen to my other songs – maybe a romantic track or a soulful number. They’ll praise the song, but in the end, they will request me to create a party song. Record labels are obsessed with party numbers. They think that ek chal gaya, toh dus aise bana dete hai.

Do you think the Indian music industry is extremely restrictive?
When I came to India, there were two types of music – Bollywood and Indipop. Over the years, Indipop was sidelined. The music channels were no longer playing music. If music channels begin airing reality shows, then where will music be aired? All the independent artistes were suffering. I went pleading to all the record companies but we didn’t get much help.
But now, the scene has changed again. Today we have a Pepsi Indies channel. Plus, the online platform has become much bigger. Raw, real talents release their music independently on Youtube. Music labels can’t fool us anymore saying, “Aapka CD nahi bika.”
