In light of the increasing rate of crime against women, Meghna Gulzar’s Chhapaak touches the issue of rampant acid attacks in India. It is a story of Malti played by Deepika Padukone, who was attacked with acid on a street in New Delhi, in 2005. The film gives an understanding of the ground reality for an acid attack survivor.

It shows the state of legal, medical and social affairs in India that play a pivotal role in changing the narrative of the life of a survivor. The irreparable damage, the mental wounds, the survival, the recovery from trauma and the transformation that Malti undergoes are portrayed by the very talented Deepika Padukone.
