Binge Or Cringe: The Red Sea Diving Resort Review
The latest Netflix Original, The Red Sea Diving Resort is a true story. Does it live up to the material?
The Red Sea Diving Resort, Netflix’s latest original film, is based on a fascinating true story. When we first saw the trailer, we couldn’t wait to see what the film had in store for us.
The story revolves around a group of spies in the 1980s who used the front of a coastal resort to rescue a group of Jewish Ethiopians from Sudan to Israel. It is a story of deception, courage and an ingenious idea. However, the execution of the film is far from courageous.
On watching the film, you are first reminded of the brilliant film Argo directed by Ben Affleck. Which not only has a similar premise but is also made exceedingly well. The storyline keeps you on the edge and the performances are praise-worthy. The Red Sea Diving Resort fails on both those counts.

For all those of you who were excited about Chris Evans playing the lead character in this one, the casting is not as effective as one would imagine. We are so used to seeing Evans play the role of Captain America in the Marvel universe, he seems to carry that weight around with him. What happens as a result is that the character seems superhero-like in a film which is not about superheroes, but about human courage.
The film moves at a pace which is predictable and some of the events, you can see coming from a mile away. The film also is a black and white portrayal of the rescuers and those who are being rescued. Shades of grey would have added a layer of intrigue.
Lastly, it is important to say that The Red Sea Diving Resort is not a bad film. It is just a film that we expected much more from. We would recommend giving it a watch because it just made us believe that fact is stranger than fiction. The film deserves your time just to make you aware of this event, that you would otherwise not know about.
The Verdict: Blah-worthy.
