Binge Or Cringe: Should Netflix's Selection Day Make It To Your Watch List This Weekend?
Selection day is a sports drama based on Aravind Adiga's book. The story revolves around two brothers named Radha and Manju staying in MP. Their father is obsessed to make them cricketers and ever since they are born, he starts planning each and every step so that in future, they make it to the Under 16 cricket team and play professional cricket. However, the father is a ruthless militant who doesn’t even address his sons by their names and instead calls them as Champion Number 1 and 2, keeps them away from their mother, beats them up and doesn’t let the younger one study. He eventually brings them to Mumbai, the city of dreams. While all this is happening, on the other side, one of his sons is not interested in cricket wee bit.

The series promises lots of fight sequences between the father and the coach, reminiscent of Dangal movie. There are emotional moments as well.

The character of Manju is essayed by the very talented Mohammad Samad (best remembered for Tummbad), who packs in a vulnerable and spirited performance. Yash Dholye, who plays Radha in the series, is a champion in batting, but seems to be out of form. Rajesh Tailang, the father struggles with the one tone writing, hence, his character is always shown to be this angry man.

Other notable mentions are Mahesh Manjrekar as the master coach who is now a professor. Unique choice! Ratna Pathak Shah who is adorable as the headmistress of the school and Shiv Pandit as well, as Lord Shiva's son!

Our Verdict

Selection Day is an easy watch but the plot is infused with several stereotypical tropes like the aggressive father, bullying at school, school romance and so on. And to make matters worse, there is cricket choreography which is supposed to be the biggest plot point, but is pretty weak.
