Why We Can’t Wait For Netflix India’s Ghost Stories
Individually, they are fabulous directors and storytellers par excellence. Together, they are a force to reckon with. Arguably India’s finest directors, they have already given us two amazing compilation films and we’re psyched that the third is on its way.

Zoya Akhtar is touted to be India’s finest director after the splendid 2019 she has had – after Made in Heaven and Gully Boy. Karan Johar is not just a fine filmmaker but also a talk show host, star producer and subject of controversy every now and then. Anurag Kashyap, India’s first indie director is now receiving his share of the limelight with the success of Sacred Games. Dibakar Banerjee has a string of successful and critically acclaimed films to his name – Oye Lucky Lucky Oye and Detective Byomkesh Bakshy among others.

Their first anthology film, Bombay Talkies, was made in 2013 and was set in the city of dreams, Bombay. Each story was varied and spoke about various problems suffered by people from various strata of society. To mark the 100th year of Indian cinema, the film was given a lot of love and was even screened at Cannes Film Festival.

Their next collaboration happened in 2018, a Netflix original called Lust Stories. A commentary on modern relationships and sex, all four stories were told from the perspective of the woman. Each story was unique and gave us an insight into what it means to be a 21st century woman. It was one of the most watched films on Netflix at the time.

Their latest film, also a Netflix Original, Ghost Stories has just gone into production and is expected to release on the platform soon. No date has been announced for the same. As the name suggests, Ghost stories will be a supernatural anthology film. As fine as all the directors are, none of them have ventured into the horror genre before. It will be truly exciting to see how the best directors in India known for their nuanced film-making take on a genre that is so unknown to them. We can’t wait to see this one!
