OMG! Shalini Pandey Felt ‘Anxious’ While Shooting The ‘Charan Seva’ R*pe Scene In Maharaj; Says, ‘Told My Team I Don't Want To Be In A Closed Room’
Shalini Pandey, who essayed the role of Kishori in Maharaj, opened up about the ‘charan seva’ rape scene and recalled how anxious she felt during the shoot
Actress Shalini Pandey became a household name after she made her Tollywood debut with Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Arjun Reddy (2017). While she went on to star in other movies, she came under the spotlight for her performance in Ranveer Singh co-starrer Jayeshbhai Jordaar (2022). Well is has now made the headlines for her portrayal of the innocent and naive Kishori in Junaid Khan and Jaideep Ahlawat starrer Maharaj. Currently, streaming on Netflix, the film was announced with only a poster, leaving fans intrigued about it’s story.

During a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, Shalini opened up about the shooting process of the ‘charan seva’ rape scene and how deeply it affected her emotionally. Shedding light on the Siddharth P Malhotra directorial, she plays the role of a woman who is sexually exploited by her religious guru. Opening about the same, she shared that she is sensitive to the things that happen around her, which is why she stays away from social media and has also stopped reading the newspapers. The 30-year-old actress elaborated, “When I actually did the scene with the Maharaj, I didn't realise what impact it had on me. I finished filming, and I told my team I don't want to be in a closed room. I need time. I need some fresh air. I'm getting a little anxious. Jaideep obviously understood. Pandey went on to add that initially when she read the script, she felt that Kishori for stupid, however it was during the shooting of the film that she realised that she wasn’t as she had grown up with such beliefs. Her thoughts were conditioned to the point that she believed in everything that she was doing. She added, “ When you feel and do it and think about it, it shatters you. Then you realise she is not stupid. I hope she knew that this was happening to her.”
For those who don’t know, Maharaj is based on a true incident of the Maharaj Libel Case of 1862, one of the most significant legal battles in India. Junaid Khan plays the role of a journalist and social reformer Karsandas Mulji, on the other hand, Jaideep Ahlawat essays the role of Jadunathji Brijratanji Maharaj one of the heads of the Vallabhacharya sect. Shalini plays the role of Kishori, a naive girl who is engaged to Mulji.
