On Thursday, the Bombay High Court cleared the path for the release of a Netflix docu-series centered on the life of Indrani Mukerjea, the accused in the 2012 murder of her daughter Sheena Bora. The court, dismissing the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) plea, asserted it found no prejudice to the prosecution or the trial, and stated that it would provide reasons separately.
The central agency had sought an injunction on the release of the docu-series until the completion of the trial in the case. Titled 'The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth,' the series explores the disappearance of 25-year-old Sheena Bora and was slated to debut on Netflix on February 23. Following the court's request last week, Netflix organized a special screening for CBI officers and relevant lawyers, with the judges also reviewing the series last weekend. Netflix then announced the postponement of the series release to Thursday, February 29.
During the Thursday hearing, Additional Solicitor General Devang Vyas, representing the CBI, argued that the series could prejudice the administration of justice and fair trial. He contended that it might shape a public perception that could, in turn, impact the judicial perspective. Nevertheless, the court postponed its decision, revealing that it had also viewed the series and had, in fact, anticipated that the CBI would not request a stay on the release. The bench of Justices Revati Mohite-Dere and Manjusha Deshpande affirmed, "There is nothing in the series that goes against the prosecution or the trial. We tried to look at it in every single way, but honestly, we did not find anything."

The judges noted that none of the witnesses interviewed by the series creators has spoken a word against the prosecution. They emphasized, "Not a single witness has said anything. Let us not say much as the series is yet to be released. Tell us which witness has spoken which is contrary to the prosecution? In fact, it is favoring the prosecution," the judges asserted. Furthermore, the court commented that media trials and debates on ongoing cases are not a novel occurrence, and there can be no censorship of such discussions.
