Fact Or Fiction? Real Life Stories Of The Serial Killers in Mindhunter Season 2
Netflix Mindhunter Season 2 did a fabulous job of telling us the stories of some of the most famous serial killers in the world and truly terrifying us through those tales. Through the lens of the FBI’s Behavioural Science Unit, the facts portrayed in the show are mostly accurate, although some parts have been dramatized for entertainment purposes. If you are a true crime fan, you must be as inquisitive as we were to find out what actually happened. We took a deeper look at the crimes committed by Charles Manson as well as the Atlanta Child Murders and here’s what we found.

1. Charles Manson

It would be more accurate to call Charles Manson a cult leader rather than a serial killer. As a young man, Manson was a singer and songwriter. Soon enough, he was noticed to have aggressive and anti-social behavior and was arrested for a few petty crimes. Through his music, he was noticed and gained quite a fan following. This led him to form the Manson Family – a cult he presided over. He fostered an environment of hallucinogenic drugs and race-motivated propaganda. It is his followers that went on to murder a total of approximately 35 people over the years, including a high-profile murder of actress Sharon Tate. Manson was finally subject to life imprisonment along with a lot of his cult members. It is indeed horrifying to think that while he did not really have blood in his hands, he was the mastermind behind these crimes.

2. Atlanta Child Murders

The biggest focus for the second season of Mindhunter, the Atlanta Child Murder case is a truly terrifying one. Between the years 1979 and 1981 in Atlanta, Georgia, something strange was happening. Children were going missing. What was common between these children? They were all black and came from low-income households. As the bodies kept piling up, it soon became clear that these crimes were connected. The black community believed the crimes were racially motivated and were thus carried out by the Klu Klux Klan. Over the two years, over 28 murders were committed, some of them young adults too. Finally, a man by the name of Wayne Williams was arrested, like in the show. However, although the police believed he was behind all of them, they could tie him to only two bodies. The case still hasn’t been solved for the rest.

To see the sheer brilliance of Mindhunter, do Google the real life images of killers and match them with the actors cast to play the parts – the resemblance is uncanny!
