Rob Lowe Recalls The Time When His The Outsiders Co-Star Tom Cruise Threw Starry Tantrums While Sharing A Room
Hollywood actor Rob Lowe reveals how his The Outsiders co-star Tom Cruise went ‘ballistic’ over sharing a room with him during the film’s shoot
Mission Impossible star Tom Cruise is among one of the most desirable actors down West, thanks to his intimidating personality and humble nature. But, well, was it always the same? A recent statement by Tom’s The Outsiders co-star Rob Lowe hints at otherwise. It was during his appearance on Dax Shepard’s podcast Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard that Rob recounted his experience of working with Tom Cruise in the 1983 drama, The Outsiders. During the same, Rob revealed how Tom threw fits upon known that he has to share a room with him.
Rob Lowe was quoted saying, “All of the L.A. people survived the L.A. auditions, and then the hand-picked people had to go to New York to face the New York version. So it was me and Tom Cruise and Emilio Estevez and C. Thomas Howell. It was the first time I ever stayed at The Plaza Hotel, and we check-in and Tom finds out that we’re sharing a room and just goes ballistic," followed with a laugh. However, Rob has no grudges against Tom.
He added, “To me, what’s great about the story is, there are certain people who have always been who they are, and that element of them has powered them to where they are today and the rest is history. And the notion that an 18-year-old actor with a walk-on part in Endless Love and like the 7th lede in Taps could have that kind of like wherewithal."
Heaving praises over Tom, Rob continued, “I remember going, 'Wow, this guy is the real deal. I mean it made me laugh, it was gnarly. But at the end of it, you can't argue with the results. He’s had his eye on the ball since day one." Rob also mentioned Tom’s ‘relentless’ competitiveness about learning stunts for the film.
