Actress Adèle Haenel ANGRILY EXITS Award Ceremony After Rape-Accused Roman Polanski Wins Best Director
French filmmaker Roman Polanski, who was accused of raping a minor, bagged the Best Director and Best Screenplay honours for his outing, An Officer and a Spy, at a recently-held award ceremony, which is equivalent to that of Oscars. This, however, didn’t go down very well with actress Adèle Haenel, who stormed out of the award show, as soon as Roman Polanski’s name was announced. In a video from this very moment, Adèle could be heard yelling, “Shame!” as she exited in absolute anger.

Adèle was the first French actress, a #MeToo flag bearer of sorts, who opened up on her ordeal of being sexually abused as a 12-year-old child by Christophe Ruggia, the director of her first film. “Distinguishing Polanski is spitting in the face of all victims,” she had said in the run-up to the Cesars. Earlier this month, the entire French Academy jury was forced to resign, amid the concern that the 86-year-old filmmaker had topped the list of nominations.

In fact, a streak of protestors chanting anti-Roman slogans like “Lock up Polanski!” tried to crash into the theatre where the ceremony was being held. They were, however, booed by the police officials through tear gas firing. France’s Culture Minister Franck Riester had issued a warning that giving Roman an honour would be “symbolically bad given the stance we must take against sexual and sexist violence”.

In response to Adèle Haenel’s action, a lot of netizens hailed the actress and criticised the award ceremony. We came across comments like. “SHAME ON YOU FRANCE #MerciAdeleHaenel” “Bravo à Adèle Haenel, Red heart sur elle et honte aux #cesars2020” “QUEEN!”
