Made In China, Movie Review: Consensual Sex Is Beautiful And It's Nod Of Consent To This Almost Beautiful Mouni Roy-Rajkummar Rao Union
Sex Education is damn necessary in India and Raj-Mouni-Boman show the way in Made In China. READ THE REVIEW
I had least expectations from this film and trudged along to the theatre thinking that I am going waste three hours of my life. I spent the first 45 minutes snacking away, Rajkummar Rao was quite unconvincing as the guy who wants to make it big. Mouni Roy had uttered a dirty line 'Jao jaake apni marvake aao'. Boman Irani I knew was sexologist Dr Mahendra Watsa of Mumbai Mirror on celluloid. Big deal, I thought! And honestly, nothing much was happening in front of my eyes except Mouni wanting to puff away closing her bedroom door, Raj looking quite zoned out and Boman making you wonder why he has been cast.
But just before the official Popcorn-Pepsi break, Made In China gets an aphrodisiac. Everyone stars peaking and you feel so shallow that we are a bunch of hypocrites who think sex almost 24 X 7 but when it comes to taking about it, our lips don't perform. That's the objective of the film and thereon, it is driven rightly till the climax.
I think I should be stoned if I talk about Raj or Roy's performance before Boman's. I mean, I really have no words. This man literally dwarfs everybody and everything around him, his hard argumentative talk towards the end that sex is bloody normal takes the cake and many of his scenes especially in the second half are worth walking miles to see.Mouni Roy has vastly improved. I didn't like her in Gold and Romeo Akbar Walter, but now I am waiting for Brahmastra and Mogul. The hypocrisy in us is best exposed by Mouni-Raj scene (she scores well here) where Raj tells her that 'you didn't mind making me consume the aphrodisiac until you knew that I am its manufacturer' (actually, both complement each other here well).
Over to Raj. He is fine but going by his past record, I expected a far better performance from him. The actor in him fails to pour out in some scenes. Come on Raj, this is constructive criticism and you will admit that you have done far better in many other films. Something was amiss in you in this outing. I repeat, he is fine but...
Paresh Rawal, Amyra Dastur, Gajraj Rao pass with sufficiently adequate marks.
What I missed was strong direction (Mikhil Musale, you could have made this film crispier), perhaps which is why Raj is there and not there in some scenes.
Music adds nothing to the film, but thankfully doesn't take away anything either- as it often happens nowadays
I am going with THREE with a salute to Boman Irani.
