Yami Gautam Hits Back At Abhay Deol In Fairness Cream Controversy
Abhay Deol had accused Bollywood celebrities of promoting colourism by endorsing fairness creams. And now Fair & Lovely girl Yami Gautam has a few words for him
In a viral Facebook post, Abhay Deol had recently slammed
Bollywood celebrities like Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor,
Shahid Kapoor and John Abraham for endorsing fairness creams.
Kaabil actress Yami Gautam, who became a household name
thanks to her endorsement deal with Fair & Lovely, has now spoken out about
it.
Yami, who is Fair & Lovely's face till date, says she
will not choose her endorsements on the basis of someone else’s ideology. “When
we talk about individuality and choice, it’s my life, my decisions… why
question my credibility? I am a self-made girl. I will not run my career on
somebody else’s decision or ideology. I have my own mind,” Yami said in an
interview.
“The brand has the right to advertise a product but you
cannot show that not being fair is an upsetting thing. You can advertise your
brand, but showing not being fair is something to be upset and sad about is not
correct,” Yami Gautam said.
Yami, who will next be seen in Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar
3, which is set for release on May 12, had kept mum on the one of the
hottest debates in B-Town till now.
It all started with a Facebook post by Abhay Deol who blamed Bollywood stars of perpetuating colourism by promoting fairness
creams.
That camp comprises stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya
Rai Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor and John Abraham, who have all
peddled products which promise light skin.
And then the debate became headline fodder once again
when SpotboyE.com reported that Ranbir Kapoor had turned down a deal worth
Rs 9 crore to
endorse a fairness cream.
Interestingly, Ranbir’s ex-girlfriend Sonam Kapoor, who
has herself endorsed such a product, had a brief online spat with Abhay after
he posted his scathing critique. She reminded him that his cousin Esha Deol had
also done a similar ad.
