Bollywood ace choreographer Saroj Khan passed away today at early hours suffering a cardiac arrest. The legendary choreographer breathed her last in Mumbai’s Guru Nanak hospital after she was recently admitted due to breathing issues. Over the decades, the three-time National Award winner, choreographer Saroj Khan gave fans countless iconic songs and worked with many different stars. As late choreographer Saroj Khan had immense love for dancing, did you know that her love for dance once made her mother think she was a retard and took her to visit the doctor instead?
During an interview with Rediff in 2012, Saroj Khan revealed that she would watch her shadow and dance, which eventually led to her mother thinking that she was crazy. The legendary choreographer said. “I come from an orthodox family but I turned out to be a freak! I used to see my shadow and dance. My mother thought I was a retard and took me to a doctor who told her ‘she just wants to dance, so let her dance.”
As Saroj Khan mentioned how her mother thought she was a retard and revealed that she took her to the doctor. Sharing details about what happened during the visit to the doctor, Saroj Khan shared that the doctor mentioned to her mother that there’s nothing wrong with her and that she just wants to dance, and so she must let her do that. Moving on, Saroj Khan revealed how the doctor suggested to her mother about films and said, “The doctor suggested that she put me in the film industry since my family needed money. The choreographer added, “I was the oldest of four sisters and one brother. I had to take care of everyone in the house.”
Saroj Khan started her career as a child artiste in Bollywood and had joined a dance group at the age of 10. The choreographer became an assistant to dance director B Sohanlal and started her career in choreography at the age of 13, until her first break as an independent choreographer in the 1974 film Geetaa Mera Naam.
