Sohum Shah, the actor and producer behind the 2018 critically acclaimed film Tumbbad, recently announced that a sequel is in the works. The news comes just a day after the original movie was re-released in theaters, rekindling interest in its atmospheric horror and dark themes. Directed by Rahi Anil Barve, Tumbbad gained praise for its unique storyline, visual grandeur, and its chilling portrayal of greed and obsession. Shah, who produced the film through his production company, Sohum Shah Films, took to social media to share the exciting update with fans.
In his statement, Shah expressed that Tumbbad has been a deeply personal and special project for him, describing it as a "labour of love." He acknowledged the overwhelming response the film continues to receive, even six years after its original release, and emphasized that this lasting appeal reaffirms his company’s philosophy that "content is king." In a recent podcast interview with Ranveer Allahbadia, Sohum Shah also revealed how the film's script is ready and filming to begin soon. The original Tumbbad is set in a rural village in Maharashtra and follows the character Vinayak Rao (played by Shah) as he becomes consumed by greed in his quest to find a mythical treasure guarded by the terrifying, cursed entity Hastar. The sequel, according to the press release, will expand upon this dark, mythical universe, presenting bigger twists and delving further into what happens when greed spirals out of control.
