Too Steamy For Censor Board
As many as 10 films have come under severe censorship problems, so far this year, a record of sorts.

Of this Dirty 10, some faced flak because of their political content and others came under the scanner for being too sexy for comfort.

Meanwhile, following the reduction of the length of kisses in the James Bond flick Spectre, the chairman of Censor Board of Film Certification Pahlaj Nihalani is under fire for being the most 'unenlightened' censor chief in the history of Indian cinema. He persists in giving odd statements in the press, defending himself against his detractors.

Contradictorily, the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting has stated clearly that the job of the censors is to just certify films without subjecting them to arbitrary cuts.

Of the 10 banned films, a handful of them were ultimately cleared.

The fate of three much-discussed films which were rejected, however, appears to be sealed forever. Unless they are reconsidered, Indian audiences are not likely to ever see them at the multiplexes.

The first one among them is Unfreedom, an indie film directed by debutant Raj Amit Kumar. Located in New York and New Delhi, the film was banned for depicting sexuality frankly, besides including elements of same-gender sex and terrorism.

The second banned film, The Painted House, in Malayalam, has been directed by brothers Santosh and Satish Babusenan, who used to work with MTV earlier. Their film deals with an elderly writer who is attracted to a young woman, who walks into his life to strike a passionate relationship. The brothers refused to accept the many cuts ordered by the censors.

And third, there's Hollywood's 50 Shades Of Grey, based on the worldwide bestselling novel, which will not hit the 'plexes because of its steamy sex scenes. Its distributors had offered voluntary cuts but these weren't acceptable to the Censor Board.

And so the film censorship muddle continues.
