THROWBACK! When Sonam Kapoor Recalled Being Body-Shamed By Older Relatives; Said, ‘I Had Body Hair, Acne, My Skin Colour Was A Bit Darker’
Sonam Kapoor had once opened up about being body-shamed during her teenage years by her relatives for being tall and having a darker complexion
Over the years, Sonam Kapoor has broken a lot of stereotypes attached to Bollywood actresses. While she has been complimented for carrying herself with grace in every piece of clothing she wears, for her height and her beauty, she has never shied away from talking about facing criticism for the same. During an interaction she had opened up about a time when she was constantly body-shamed by her older relatives.
Being a teenager is indeed not easy and especially one living in India, where not only does one have to bear being criticised by their peers, but also relatives who think they are doing someone a favour by pointing out what is unacceptable about one’s body. Sonam too had to go through a similar experience. During her interview with Vogue, the fashionista had opened up about how she was heavily criticised for having a darker skin tone. In a video posted by SheThePeople on Instagram, the 37-year-old actress says, “My teenage years, I had a lot of hormonal issues like most teenagers have. Like I had body hair, I had acne. My skin colour is a bit darker which is a situation in India. I have had old relatives tell me, “You are so dusky and tall. Who will marry you? She goes on to express how women, from a younger age are given an education only for their marriage bio-data to look desirable. The Neerja actress said, “A lot of girls even get educated. So, it’s like on their CV for like a marriage CV. Everything is prepped for you to be desirable.”
Today the actress is happily married to Anand Ahuja for more than five years now. They welcomed their son Vayu Kapoor Ahuja in 2022.
