Sonam Remembers Neerja Bhanot On Her Birth Anniversary

Sonam Kapoor received appreciation from all quarters for her brilliant performance in Neerja earlier this year. The actress had even mentioned how the film was special to her. Today, on Neerja Bhanot’s 53rd birth anniversary, Sonam shared an emotional and heartwarming message for the braveheart. She wrote, “Happy birthday Neerja, I’d rather celebrate your birth than any other day...You are always going to be a guiding light in darkness. You’ve inspired me in more ways than one...”

Neerja Bhanot was a flight attendant for Pan Am. The 22-year-old sacrificed her life in order to save the lives of 359 passengers on board Pan Am Flight 73, which was hijacked by terrorists on September 5, 1986. Neerja was awarded the Ashok Chakra – the highest award for bravery – posthumously.

Sonam brought Neerja’s life to the big screen with the Ram Madhvani-directed biopic. As a part of her research, the actress had even met Neerja’s family. She had interacted closely with Neerja’s mother Rama Bhanot and had formed a deep bond with her. Sonam was recently adjudged the Best Actress at the Indian Film Festival in Melbourne for her gritty act in the biopic.
