Shyam Benegal has been undergoing dialysis at his home after both his kidneys failed
National award winning director Shyam Benegal set a benchmark for parallel cinema post the 1970s. He is one of the most sought after personalities in Indian cinema. If recent reports are to be believed his health has been deteriorating for quite some time now. According to Times Now, both his kidneys have failed, which has led the filmmaker to undergo dialysis at his home.
The media publication reports that the 88-year-old filmmaker is unable to go to the hospital owing to his deteriorating health. The doctors have been visiting his residence to give him the necessary treatment. As per the recent update, the 18-time national award winner has been advised by the doctors to take rest and is kept under medical observation.
In a report by the publication, the staff of the filmmaker revealed that he had been doing good in the past, but hasn’t shown up at the office for the last few days. They went on to confirm that Benegal has been continuously working on his upcoming projects, one of them being Mujeeb: The Making of a Nation. The movie is based on the life of Bangladesh’s first President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
For the unversed, Benegal made a name for himself in the entertainment industry as a film director, screenwriter and documentary filmmaker. Not only is he the president of the Federation of Film Societies of India, but he also owns a production company, Sahyadri Films, and has written books based on his movies. Up until now, he had been awarded 18 National Film Awards, a Nandi Award, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, a Padma Bhushan, a Padma Shree Award and a Filmfare Award.
