Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar took social media by storm when they starred together in a tobacco advertisement. Netizens had taken to the internet to brutally criticise and troll the actors. The matter escalated to the point where the OMG 2 actor withdrew his contract instantly and penned down a heartfelt apology to his fans for hurting their sentiments. Now, according to a recent report by Zee News, the central government responded to a contempt petition.

The media publication reported that the centre informed the Lucknow bench of Allahabad Court it has issued a notice to the three senior actors for their connection with the advertisement they did for the Gutka company. The centre’s counsel informed the High Court on Friday that the Supreme Court was also hearing the same issue. They stated that the instant petition should be dismissed. 


After the submission, the bench fixed a hearing for 9 May 2024. A bench of Justice Rajesh Singh Chauhan had directed the central government to decide the representation of the petitioner, who had originally contented that action must be taken against celebrities who are presented with high-profile awards but are advertising for tobacco companies. As per the media publication, the court was also informed about Amitabh Bachchan sending a legal notice to a company that showed his advertisement despite him having already cancelled his contract. It is to be noted that no action has been taken against the matter.

For those who don’t know, the direct advertisement of tobacco and Gutka-related products is banned in the country due to its health risks. However, the companies bypass the regulations through surrogate advertisements and promoting the brand under seemingly unrelated products like flavoured betel nuts.
