Senior Actors Would Have Refused Badlapur
Why do we see you with your Badlapur T-shirt on?
The idea in Badlapur was to get a 360 degree acceptance which we achieved. The classes and masses both liked it. I am very proud of this film and probably the proudest I have been of any film of mine so far, so chatthi pe pehnke chal raha hu mein (smiles).

So,  how nervous were you before this film? You are more of a chocolate boy...
I was nervous about whether I  will pull off the 40 year old part with prosthetic or no, but I think having actors like Vinay Pathak, Nawazuddin Siddique, Huma Qureshi helped me quite a lot .

Did you ask your dad (David Dhawan) before signing Badlapur?
No, I hadn't..

But you took time to say yes...
Just five days. But Sriram didn't believe me when I gave him my nod of consent. He said I would still run away if my dad forbade me to do the film.

And your dad did forbid you at some point...
No (smiles), he didn't.

If I remember correctly, he once told you that you should become an actor on your own. Do you think you have become one now?
I don't know. My thinking is still the same when I signed my first film (Student Of The Year) , I am neither giving a pat on my back nor feeling supremely confident. I will not change. I just know that I have made a very difficult film work and I had the best team possible to do it.

Is that a way to stay grounded? It's natural to get carried away at this point of time...

Definitely, But thankfully, I didn't have the time to get carried away. I started shooting for ABCD 2 just one day after Badlapur hit the theatres.

You think you were lucky to get a role like this so early in your career?
It's destiny. If I had said 'no', Sriram would have probably gone to senior actors. I still don't know what he saw in me.

If the script had gone to other actors first?
I can see a lot of them turning it down because it was quite a twisted story.

Do you think that the Censor Board was harsh towards the film ?
I don't think so. But yeah, I don't agree to a standard set of rules being followed for every film. Censors shouldn't dilute a film. Every film should be treated as a separate entity.

So what's in your kitty?
My brother Rohit's next which has John Abraham, Jacqueline Fernandez and I. And of course, Remo D'souza's ABCD 2. And then, there's a film with Dharma Productions.

Is Varun ready for more experimentation in cinema?
Absolutely.

What was Karan Johar's reaction to Badlapur?
He called up to say that he loved the film. And I knew that my hard work will not go down the drain.

You didn't tell your dad about Badlapur before signing it but you told Karan...
Right (chuckles).

You rocked in Main Tera Hero. Are you going to work with your dad again?
Next year.

Will it be a comedy?
It can't be a horror film (laughs).
