Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali is best known for his contribution to Indian cinema. A four-time national award winner, SLB has achieved many Filmfare Awards, a Padma Shri, and others in his long illustrious career. After his last film Padmaavat, the filmmaker is busy with his upcoming film Ganguabi Kathiawadi, with Alia Bhatt. Now, according to the latest reports, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali is planning to revive Heera Mandi, a neighbourhood, specifically known as the red-light district of Lahore, located in the walled city.
A Peepingmoon.com report said that SLB has joined hands with a streaming platform to make the period drama as a web-film. As per the report, the streaming platform is Netflix. The sources in the report confirmed the revival of the project and revealed that it will go on floors in the first quarter of 2021. A source said, “Bhansali and his production company's CEO Prerna Singh have been in talks with Netflix for quite some time now and they recently agreed to work together on Heera Mandi which has been a passion project for the filmmaker. The film has been envisioned as a big-scale custom drama and will have all the elements of a Sanjay Leela Bhansali epic even though he's not directing it himself.”
According to the report, the filmmaker will not be directing this project that is seeing the light of the day after 13 years. The report stated that the film on Heera Mandi will be directed by Vibhu Puri, who had worked on dialogues for Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer Guzaarish. The report also stated that the director has kick-started preparations for the film. He will be starting pre-production early next year.
Meanwhile, the source also revealed that Heera Mandi and Gangubai Kathiawadi will be two different projects. The report also said that Bhansali was originally planning to make Heera Mandi with Rani Mukerji, but things didn’t work out. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Preity Zinta, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ names were also linked with the project earlier.
