Radhika Madan Shares The Story Of Getting A ‘Pity’ Audition For Irrfan Khan’s Angrezi Medium And Losing 10 Kgs In A Month For It - EXCLUSIVE
Radhika Madan shares the story of how she bagged Homi Adjania’s Angrezi Medium alongside Irrfan Khan, which turned out to be the late actor’s last release before his death last year in April.
Radhika Madan made a switch to films from TV when she was at the peak of her TV career. Going by the track record of TV actors that tried their hands in films before her, the chances of her succeeding were slim. To add to that, she started with a non-conventional Bollywood debut film like Vishal Bhardwaj’s Pataakha. However, her histrionics were able to convince the sceptics otherwise.
Slowly and steadily, Radhika is making her place as a leading actress in the industry and last year, she got the privilege of working alongside the iconic actor Irrfan Khan as his daughter, in Homi Adjania’s Angrezi Medium, which turned out to be Irrfan’s last film release before his death last April. Recalling how she got that part; Radhika shares the story behind it. “I had gone to Dinesh Vijan’s office actually for Shiddat and Homi was there. I had just done Pataakha and was 12 kgs heavier. I spotted Homi, went up to him and told him how big of a fan I was of his work. I knew that he was making Angrezi Medium and told him that I wanted to audition for it. He just looked at me and said, ‘No way, we are looking for 16-17 years old girls for the role but good job in Pataakha’,” she reveals. But Homi’s rejection didn’t deter Radhika. It rather fuelled her desire to get the part more. “I went home and kept messaging him that sir, please let me just audition. There was something inside me that was continuously saying, ‘I know I am Tarika’,” she shares. And it worked.
Homi finally surrendered to her requests and gave her an audition. “After getting exhausted by my hogging, they gave me a pity audition as Homi knew he wouldn't take me anyway, but he somehow ended up liking it. There were two-three rounds of auditions after that since I was looking a certain way and I had to look like a 16-year-old. I remember I lost about 10 kgs in a month’s time to look like Tarika. I had to look like a 30–32-year-old in the second half of Pataakha and here I had to look 16. After all that process, they said that yes, I was their Tarika,” Radhika concludes with a smile.
