OMG Director Umesh Shukla On Not Directing Its Sequel: 'It Was The Makers Call, I Am Sure They Will Do Wonders'- EXCLUSIVE
Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal-starrer OMG director Umesh Shukla reveals if he was approached to direct the sequel and his views on not being able to direct part 2
Umesh Shukla’s 2012 satirical comedy-drama film, OMG: Oh My God!, featuring Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal in the lead, alongside Mithun Chakraborty, became a huge success on its release. The film dealt with the subject of God and religion and how self-proclaimed Godmen exploit people’s faith in their God for their gain. The film was based on the Gujarati play Kanji Virudh Kanji.
Recently, it was reported that the film’s sequel, OMG 2, is in the works with Umesh and Paresh not returning. The sequel will be helmed by Amit Rai and will feature Akshay Kumar, Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam. When asked if he was approached to direct the sequel, Umesh replied, “No, I wasn’t. It was the makers call and I am sure they will do wonders and the concept is such that people will be looking forward to it. I didn’t have a script by the time they wanted and they must have found something very interesting to go ahead with. The rest of the people on the team are the same so I am sure they won’t mess up the franchise. I am sure it will be a blockbuster.” Also read: Aankh Micholi Director Umesh Shukla: ‘Abhimanyu Dassani And Mrunal Thakur Made Me Believe That They Can Pull Off A Comedy’- EXCLUSIVE
Reports of OMG 2 being in the works have been in the news from as early as 2015. In a few of his older interviews, Paresh had even mentioned that the script was ready for the sequel, although he also went to deny his involvement in the project this year when reports of that started doing rounds. As per latest reports, OMG 2 will be going on floors towards August end with Pankaj while Akshay would be joining the team a month later.
Meanwhile, Umesh has his next directorial, Aankh Micholi with Abhimanyu Dassani and Mrunal Thakur up for release and its motion poster was just released yesterday. As for Paresh, he will be seen in this Friday’s release, Priyadarshan’s Hungama 2, alongside Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Meezaan and Pranitha Subhash. Akshay on the other hand has the release of Bell Bottom next month, followed by Sooryavanshi, Prithviraj, Bachchan Pandey and Atrangi Re. He also has to complete shoots for Ram Setu and Raksha Bandhan.
