Naseers Katha To Be Retold!

Naseeruddin Shah, Farooque Shaikh and Deepti Naval’s situational dramedy, Katha, produced by Suresh Jindal, will soon be retold on the big screen by ace journalist-critic-turned-filmmaker Khalid Mohamed. The writer-director has been working on the script for the last couple of months to modernise the story and the setting. A producer is already on board and has acquired the rights to the title Katha.

A source close to Jindal confirms and says, “There have been meetings between the director, the new producer and Sureshji. They have discussed the details and modalities. An announcement will follow only once the paperwork is in place. Casting will begin a few weeks later.

Katha was originally directed by Sai Paranjpe, who also directed Chashme Buddoor among other hits from parallel or middle-of-the-road cinema of the 1980s. The story revolved around two friends played by Naseer and late Farooque. Naseer played the submissive shoe company employee while Farooque played the outgoing flamboyant mister in the neighbourhood angling to impress the girl-next-door played by Deepti.

Apparently, even director Rohit Shetty, the king of remakes in Bollywood, had shown interest, and even offered a ‘staggering Rs 20 lakh for the rights to remake Katha. Jindal, back then, had shown no interest in the offer, and neither did Shettys team take the discussion forward.

Now, its only a matter of time before Katha comes right back on the big screen!
