Legendary music director Mohammed Zahir Hashmi, popularly known as Khayyam, who passed away on Monday, was cremated with full state honours
The funeral of National Award winning music director
Mohammed Zahir Hashmi, known as Khayyam was performed here on Tuesday evening
with full state honours. Khayyam's mortal remains were kept at his Juhu home to
enable people pay their last respects to the legendary composer who passed away
aged 92 late on Monday. The funeral procession started from his home in
Dakshina Park Society, Juhu, at 4 p.m. to the Four Bungalows Kabrastan. The
last rites were performed at 4.30 p.m. and he was accorded full state honours,
including a gun salute, said the aide.
With such a huge contribution to the film and music industry, the sad news of his sudden demise has left everyone shocked. The late music director, who started his career at the age of 17 in the city of Ludhiana, had a career span of four decades. He was a Padma Bhushan recipient and a National Award Winner too.

Known lovingly for his work in films such as Umrao Jaan and
Kabhie Kabhie. Khayyam had developed age-related complications ariding from
chronic infection in his lungs. The composer was actually named Mohammed Zahur
Khayyam Hashmi and started his career at the age of 17 in the city of Ludhiana.
The legend won three Filmfare Awards for Best Music in 1977 for Kabhi Kabhie
and 1982 for Umrao Jaan. He was awarded the 2007 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in
Creative Music, by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy of
Music, Dance and Theatre.
