Mira Nair’s Iconic Debut Film Salaam Bombay Turns 29
Mira Nair forayed into showbiz in 1988 with Salaam Bombay, a gritty yet sensitive portrayal of the life of Mumbai’s street children. 9X Jalwa is celebrating the film’s 29th anniversary today
Mira Nair is one
of the best known auteur to come out of India and she started her journey 29
year ago with Salaam Bombay. It was a genre-defying film which was shot on
location and starred a child, picked off the streets of Mumbai. Salaam Bombay
chronicled the daily struggles and adventures of a young boy living in the mean
streets of Mumbai.
Shafiq Syed, the
child artiste went on to win a National Award for his performance in the film
which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, the Golden
Camera and Audience Awards at the Cannes Film Festival, and three awards at the
Montréal World Film Festival. The film was India's second film submission to be
nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
The film also
launched the careers of Nana Patekar, Irrfan Khan and Raghuvir Yadav. As Salaam
Bombay turns 29, 9X Jalwa is celebrating the milestone on 13th Sept
2017.
