Meghna Gulzar FINALLY Speaks Up About Deepika Padukone's JNU Visit During Chhapaak Release: It Did Impact The Film
Following its release, Deepika Padukone's film Chhapaak garnered widespread acclaim for its portrayal of a poignant narrative. However, the movie also found itself entangled in controversy when Padukone visited Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) amidst the CAA-NRC protests. This move stirred discussions beyond the film's focus on acid violence. In an interview with the Indian Express, director Meghna Gulzar openly acknowledged the influence of Padukone's visit just three days before the film's release. Gulzar admitted that the conversation around the film shifted away from its intended message about acid violence due to the controversy. This shift undoubtedly impacted the film's box office numbers, diverting attention from the core theme the director aimed to amplify. Speaking about the matter, the filmmaker expressed: "I am sure that the answer is pretty obvious. Yes, of course, it made a dent on the film. Because the conversation went from acid violence, which I intended the film to amplify, to somewhere else. So, of course it impacted the film. There is no denying that." Chhapaak is inspired by the real-life story of Laxmi Agarwal, an acid attack survivor. It centers around Malti, portrayed by Deepika Padukone, and her harrowing journey seeking justice after an assailant disfigures her face with acid due to her refusal of his proposal. Regarding the JNU incident in 2020, Deepika Padukone made an unexpected appearance at the university. She stood among the students at the Sabarmati T-point during a public meeting called by JNU alumni, following an attack on varsity students by masked individuals. Although she did not address the gathering, Padukone was present for about an hour before leaving the venue. Bollywood diva faced some serious backlash after this visit and many used trend #BoycottChhapaak hashtag on Twitter back then.

Meghna Gulzar's Sam Bahadur starring Vicky Kaushal is slated for Dec 1 release and will clash with Ranbir Kapoor's Animal at the box office.
