Khayyam's condition had turned critical this morning. The relatives has been told there was a very little chance of his survival, his end however was peaceful.
Known lovingly for his work in films such as Umrao Jaan and Kabhie Kabhie. Khayyam had developed age-related complications ariding from chronic infection in his lungs. The composer was actually named Mohammed Zahur Khayyam Hashmi and started his career at the age of 17 in the city of Ludhiana.
Winner of the Padma Bhushan, Khayyam had several prestigious awards to his name, including the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.
Khayyam's career spanned four decades (1953–1990).
The legend won three Filmfare Awards for Best Music in 1977 for Kabhi Kabhie and 1982 for Umrao Jaan. He was awarded the 2007 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in Creative Music, by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy of Music, Dance and Theatre.
